Exterior Renovations

We bought our current house in 2015 because it is on a large lot on the water. As you can see from this listing photo, the exterior was plain and the former owners made some interesting decisions about the materials they used on the outside of the home (and the inside as you will see in future posts.) We need more exterior entertaining space on the river side of the house because the current deck is only 7 feet deep, and we also need it to be screened because the mosquitos are killer out here. We worked with Elemi architects in Chattanooga in 2017 to help us figure out how we could achieve our goals. This is the illustration of what they came up with: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iVI8bYmWdro&ab_channel=SBrown . We loved it because it adds visual interest to the front elevation and disguises the step down in the roof where the deck stops, while giving us the outside entertaining space that we are looking for. We have been working on the exterior of the house for the past few years and now the exterior work is complete except for the screened porch. We still have some clean-up to do but we are just thrilled with how it looks.

As you can see, we have: limewashed the brick; taken the shutters down; replaced the view-blocking pickets on the deck with stainless steel rope and painted the deck a deep brown; changed the garage doors and exterior passage doors; replaced the exterior lights; removed the original vinyl siding and put up shingle siding and white vents; took off all the trim and soffits and replaced them with white Hardie board; removed the old porch posts and replaced them with 4 metal posts and added a handrail on the steps for our parents; covered the golden brown shingled roof with silver standing seam metal; and finally took down the white gutters and downspouts and put up gutters and downspouts that match the new roof. (Mike loves the house, but is really proud of his photogenic grass.)
