We finally finished dividing the strawberry plants that we have been growing in this area since we bought the house. We gave hundreds of plants away because they were so crowded. First we dug everything up, amended the soil with planting mix, and replanted them about 12″ apart. We mulched them with pine straw to try to keep the berries off the dirt. Mike also put planting mix around the trellis that we use for cucumbers.

We are going to grow tomatoes on this side of the house again this year. I have started a bunch of Cherokee Purple tomatoes that we will plant between the house and this support. Mike added planting mix here too, although we have amended the soil here a few times, so it’s pretty good already. If you haven’t had Cherokee Purple tomatoes, you need to try them. So delicious!!

We have two trash cans that we used to use at the farm for chicken feed and scratch grain. After many years of use, the bottoms of them are completely rusted through. I am using them this year for basil plants. You can just see them popping up. For marinara sauce, I cut a couple of large sprigs, and simmer them in my sauce–a trick I learned from the New York Times. It’s fabulous.

When we first moved to this house, I put daffodil bulbs in this pot. They really haven’t performed very well until this spring, and they are gorgeous this year.

Happy Spring (officially)! I hope that your Spring garden plans are going well.
