Cutting Garden–Dahlias are sending up flower stalks

The cutting garden is doing well, but you can definitely tell the areas that get the most sun.

This is clearly the less sunny part of the garden.
And this section clearly gets more sun.

For whatever reason, it seems that the cosmos have taken hold, but the larkspur and zinnia seeds have struggle. I saw that was the case a few weeks ago and started a couple flats of Cactus Flower zinnias. I just transplanted one of the flats into this garden. I have some more growing and will fill in with those as needed.

My husband bought me a bunch of Gerbera daisy plants for our 27th anniversary. He had to go to several stores on multiple occasions to find these. He finally got lucky and caught some as they were being unloaded. They are my FAVORITE flower.

I filled in with some red and orange/red million bells around the perimeter of the pot. I have million bells planted in my baskets above the herb garden. I love them for pots and baskets.

Finally, the dahlias that I planted last year have exploded. They are really tall, and some have sent up flower stalks. You can see that they have filled the grow through heads that I put in the ground a few weeks ago. If you have planted dahlia, you have to provide them supports or the stalks fall over.

The microclimate here is clearly really warm and gives these dahlia plants an advantage.

I hope to be posting pictures of vases of flowers from my cutting garden soon!

    1. I don’t know the varieties. I bought them at Home Depot as tubers early in 2020. I had similar ones at our other house from the same source. They grew pretty well last year, but they are as tall as me already this year.
