It is the start of the full-on grilling season. We are having pulled pork for Memorial Day, so I checked how much rub we had left–not enough. So I whipped up a batch of the one that I always make–I make an extra large batch so I have it on hand at all times.
Gather all your ingredients:

But these two are the absolute key to this recipe….

The original recipe calls for sweet paprika and mostly kosher salt with some smoked salt–I substitute the smoked versions for the entire amounts. It makes a world of difference in the final product, and you can cook the bbq in the oven and still get a smoked taste.
Basic BBQ Rub:
1 cup brown sugar, firmly packed
1 cup smoked paprika
6 tbsp black pepper
16 tbsp coarse smoked salt
8 tsp garlic powder
8 tsp onion powder
1 tbsp red pepper flakes
Add all ingredients to a thoroughly dry food processor.

Process for about 30 seconds until thoroughly combined.

This is fantastic on Boston butt, baby back ribs, beer can chicken, and chicken thighs. We absolutely love it.
Happy grilling!

Have fun. You deserve it.
