In the spring of 2021, my husband and I decided to plant forsythia along the retaining wall between our property and our neighbor. The wall is pretty tall, and I was always nervous mowing along it.
I love forsythia because they are so cheerful, especially in the really early spring when you very much need a pick me up from the gray and cold.
We planted them in two batches. We planted the first 35 bushes in spring of 2021 and then we planted another 65 in October of 2021. The dirt in this particular part of our yard is pretty terrible and rocky, but despite the difficult growing conditions, the forsythia have done really fantastic.

When they have finished blooming, I am going to cut them back to about 1/3 of their current height to encourage a more branching form instead of all the long “whips”, especially on the newest bushes.
It’s really amazing what can happen in two years. Start now and your future self will thank you.

Forsythias do say spring.
