Sweet Potato Jungle

I LOVE sweet potatoes. They are delicious, but also a really pretty and prolific plant that eventually puts out little purple flowers, kind of like a morning glory. I have even used the greenery in flower arrangements.

Unfortunately, we didn’t have a good spot to grow them because they basically take over everything because they grow so well here in SE Tennessee. Last year, we grew a few along the fence between us the the adjacent property. While we got a few, and they were delicious, it wasn’t nearly as much space as I need to grow as many as I want. So this year, my husband added a few more scoops of planting mix to the area after I had tamed the weeds, and topped it with mulch.

I bought sweet potato slips at my local Ace Hardware and planted them around the middle of May. They were really small at the time, so I took all the flower seeds that I had left, plus a handful of dill seeds and sprinkled them over the dirt.

This is what it looks like now, not quite 2 months later….

It looks so good that my neighbors have stopped to ask me what it is. I just hope that as much is going on under the ground as above it.
