Fall Garden Update–Vegetables

I pulled up our tomatoes around the middle of August after picking TONS of green ones that were still on the vines to ripen on the counter. I probably picked 40 or 50 lbs and some have gone bad, but most of them are ripening just fine. I did that to get ready for fall planting.

I used this little tub as my “nursery” for my fall crops–bok choi, kale, and lettuce.

The bok choi has done the best… I’m going to buy more seeds and see if we can get more stuff growing.

I also planted lots of carrot seeds–you start those around early to mid-August.

The trellises in this tub deter the deer from eating the carrot tops.
I have to put garden stakes around this one because the deer will eat these to the ground otherwise.

I transplanted the baby lettuce plants that came up to this tank.

So far, only 8 plants have sprouted. Lettuce transplants well as long as you keep it watered. It’s been really hot the past few days, so we have been running the sprinkler system every day.

I still need to pick these poblanos.

I have already transplanted a BUNCH of the bok choi to the garden on the south side of the house.

Bok choi is great for the fall garden because it’s easy to grow and matures quickly, but can also tolerate some cold weather.

I had some arugula seeds left which I direct sowed in the remaining stock tank that was empty.

Do you plant a fall garden?
