Storage Solution–for a couple of difficult to store items

This is a repost from a few years ago.

We used to have 5 bikes, and they took up a huge amount of floor space. I looked for a solution that would allow us to hang them up and take up as little space as possible, but still be able to get the bikes down easily when we needed them. I found Steady Rack. We only need two now and my husband mounted them in our upstairs garage between the two garage doors. Because you can swing them from side to side, you can really pack the bikes in there. Here is their website https://www.steadyrack.com/.

This is a great solution for us because we can hang these up in a small area that would be difficult to use for anything else.

Now for the really difficult item to store that has stumped us for years. We have a Swagman bike rack that fits into a hitch receiver and holds two bikes. I love this little bike rack because it is really easy to put on the car, and easy to get bikes on and off of. But…it is a really awkward shape, so it has been mostly lying on the garage floor since we bought it. I talked to my husband about it and he said that he would fabricate a hitch receiver to hang it from. Many of you know this already, but for those that don’t, I am not a patient person, so I got online and found a Bolt-On Receiver Tube from Buyers Products. We had some small pieces of heavy duty framing lumber left over from the shed project and my husband planed it and trimmed it to size. I stained it white and then my husband screwed it to the wall in the garage with some heavy duty screws. Then he screwed the receiver tube to it. Again, we were able to put this in a corner of the garage that would be difficult to use for anything else.

We hung it upside down to let gravity work with us instead of against us.
I added a small hook to hang the bolt and cotter pin on. I am going to add another hook to hang the wrench that we use to install the bike rack on the cars on the other side of the receiver tube.

I don’t know if anyone else has had a similar storage challenge, but I am so happy with what we came up with for these difficult to store items.
