Fall Gardening is Going WELL

So I made a fall garden post a few weeks ago. I went out to water this morning and decided to post an update because it’s growing so well.

The carrots are growing like crazy. They are still at least a month a way from being ready to harvest. I need to harvest them before we get really cold weather that freezes the ground. If the carrots are still in the ground when it freezes, the carrots will split.

This first trough was nibbled by the deer and they also hit the last trough. I added more stakes to both to keep the deer at bay.

My radicchio is growing okay. I added a little fertilizer which has perked them up a little.

I picked a big basket full of chard last week. I trimmed it; washed it; blanched it; and froze it for later. Some of the leaves were really gigantic.

But even after picking, the chard is still huge. You can see that the row of kale in the front has nearly caught up with the rows in the back. This is Lacinato kale and it will get even bigger.

The arugula is growing slowly and I’m not really sure why, but I think it may be due to the dry weather. I watered it thoroughly this morning. I will probably need to water it again a couple times this week.

The garden is really doing well and I expect to harvest loads of greens and carrots.

The sweet potato harvest is coming up. The deer have munched on them pretty extensively, so I am not feeling optimistic about a big harvest. We’ll see in a few weeks.
