Thrift Store Score–The Floor Lamp is Finished!

A couple of weeks ago, I posted about finding a really cool vintage floor lamp at the thrift store. Here’s a link to that post: https://cathyathomeontheriver.com/2026/01/25/thrift-store-score-a-vintage-wooden-floor-lamp/

The parts that I ordered for the lamp finally came in late last week and I bought some new sockets and cord from Lowe’s. We didn’t have a lot of energy last night, but enough to put the lamp back together.

The first thing we had to do was remove the old parts that held the sockets. They REALLY didn’t want to budge and we destroyed them in the process.

We removed the nut and washers from the bottom of the lamp too.

This lamp has a long metal tube that runs from top to bottom and is threaded on each end so that you can attach the various parts and pieces. Once you have everything assembled, you tighten the nut at the bottom to hold everything together.

We pulled the old cord with the super sketchy plug out of the lamp, but then we had to get the new wire in. The tube is really long, and the wire isn’t especially rigid, so we had to get creative. We attached the end of the wire to some utility cord with some duct tape. (We had to keep everything pretty small so that it would fit through the tube.)

Then I covered the top of the tube with the vacuum cleaner nozzle, and my husband fed the cord into the bottom of the tube. It only took about 30 seconds to feed the cord and the wire through. Once we had the wire fed through, my husband fed it through the brass fitting that holds the sockets and screwed it onto the top of the lamp.

Then we used some of the old wire that had been inside the lamp to wire up the two new sockets.

Then we adjusted the height with this handy little thumb screw.

Terrible picture…

I found a shade at the thrift store for $5, that we’re going to use for now. This is not the forever shade, but it works in the meantime.

Then my husband put the cap over the wires and we added the shade.

Now for the moment of truth–did we wire it correctly and will it work?

We’re going to use it here for the time being, and I suspect this is where it will go once we finish the room.

Pippa was “helping”.

The tube in the lamp sticks out a little too far on the bottom, so we need to do a minor adjustment so that it sits flat, but this only took about 45 minutes. (It would have been shorter, but we had to redo pulling the wire 3 times.)

Anyway, I am really happy with it. I think it looks right at home in this room.
