My friend Liz asked me to figure out how to make a Lynchburg Lemonade years ago. Here is what I came up with (when I had less money and time):
1 part whiskey
1 part triple sec
2 parts sweet and sour mix
3 parts lemon-lime soda (I have since switched to Fresca)
Combine all in a glass and pour over ice. Be CAREFUL–you cannot taste the alcohol in these. Extremely dangerous!
My 2021 Version for the Summer of Fun:
1 part whiskey
1 part triple sec
2 parts HOMEMADE sweet and sour mix
3 parts sparking lemon/lime/or orange water
Combine all in a glass and pour over ice. We just did a trial run and it’s a WINNER! (But still extremely dangerous….)

Homemade Sweet and Sour Mix:
3 cups water
3 cups sugar
2 cups freshly squeezed lemon juice
2 cups freshly squeezed lime juice
Combine sugar and water in a large pot and cook until the sugar is dissolved.

In the meantime, squeeze A LOT of lemons and limes. If you have a Kitchenaid Mixer, get the juicing attachment stat! You can juice a lot of citrus in not much time with one of those. (I bought mine at Target for around $20.)

Fortunately, I had a head start because I had squeezed a lot of lemons and limes back in January and put the juice in the freezer. Memorial Day weekend seems like the perfect excuse to get it out and use it.

I strained the pulp out of the juice because I don’t like it in a drink.

have fun
