Green Screen Update

Last year, I wrote about planting a bunch of forsythia bushes along the retaining wall between our lawn and our neighbor’s driveway. I had intended to put down river rock last year as a mulch, but it didn’t get done.

This was the first bunch we planted.

In the fall, we planted 65 more forsythia bushes down the rest of the wall. It was a LOT of work. My husband really is a saint sometimes. Anyway, there was a LOT of ground to cover with river rock. I calculated the square footage and I came up with about 1200 sf that we needed to cover. I called our local bulk material supply, and they told me that I would need 13 tons of river rock to cover everything. I was concerned about that much weight on my driveway, so I had them bring 7 tons. It was a pretty impressive pile of rocks.

I started moving them by wheelbarrow loads and it quickly became clear that we were going to need to do something else. Our neighbor has a tractor with a front end loader and she let us borrow it. My husband operated the tractor while I raked out the rocks. We got the job done in about 2 1/2 hours. We make a great team.

The part we planted last spring.
The part we planted last fall.
A little tiny bush is putting out its first blooms.

We are going to need a few more rocks (not 6 more tons), so we are going to go and get those with the trailer.

This will be so GORGEOUS when there are one hundred full grown forsythia bushes blooming. I can’t wait!
