I bought a couple batches of romaine lettuce this spring and I planted it in March. I had to dig the first batch up in preparation for some extra cold (13 degree) weather and replant it once the coast was clear.
I have been picking the outer leaves every week for the last several weeks and have been buried in lettuce despite our best salad eating efforts. To keep it fresh, I line a large food storage container with a clean flour sack towel and put the washed/rinsed lettuce in the container neatly in layers and then fold the towel over the top and put the lid on it. If you do this with your lettuce, it will stay fresh for weeks.
In the first tub of Romaine, I underplanted it with the Beauregard sweet potato slips that arrived last week.

The other tub of Romaine has a trellis on it that we put in last year, so I under planted that tub with my cucumber plants. I started pickling (Sumter), English, and Japanese cucumbers from seed. This is the first time I have grown anything other than pickling cucumbers, so we’ll see how it goes.

I planted a packet of arugula seeds in the last tank in early April and it has really taken off in the last week and a half. I picked a huge container of it on Saturday and you can’t tell that I picked any.

It gets so hot here that the salad greens are usually finished by the end of May. It is especially hot this week which may cause them to bolt even sooner.

Good planning
