A Thrift Store Re-Do for a Holiday Gift

Our youngest just started his first “real” job earlier this year and is working on putting together a grown-up apartment. When we saw him earlier this year, he said that he would love to get a coffee table and to let him know if I found one while I was out “scrounging”.

About six weeks ago, I found a sturdy coffee table that looked like a good candidate.

The shelf on the bottom wasn’t screwed down, so I removed it.

I also removed the top to make it easier to sand, prime, and paint.

While it is a sturdy table, it needed to be painted because it was made up of narrow strips of wood in a quilt like pattern.

I sanded the top and the shelf. Once I removed all the dust, I primed all of it first with a shellac based primer. Then I applied 2 coats of stain block oil based primer and sanded it smooth. Then 2 coats of top coat–Sherwin Williams Oil based paint in the Farrow and Ball color, Bone.

Seeing it now, it’s hard to believe it was only $10.

Here’s the before and after:

I love it. It will work really well with the other things he has in his living room.

I found these panels for his girlfriend at a consignment store–also for the living room.

There are a total of 4 panels. These are just 2 of them. I hated to ruin the surprise, but I sent her photos because I wanted to be sure she’d like it. She loves it. This is a really beautiful piece and one that will work now, but also well into the future. The background is a gold leaf type material and is much prettier in real life.

The color of the table looks great with the green in the wings of the cranes.
